1-12-2024 Snow Watch 10pm

I just got word that Iron Snowshoe opened their trails as of 3pm today.

They are the only trail system that has opened so far.

Greetings and welcome!

10PM

I spent some time outside cleaning up the heavy spots that hadn’t been cleared this year. The snow was really blowing around a lot but the amount coming down wasn’t that impressive.

The places that I had cleaned up two days ago and only had the 2″ of puffy clipper snow now have about 6″ of fairly sturdy snow. On the lawn I measured 10-12″.

There are blizzard warnings out for us right now. It may be nasty somewhere in the warning area, but there is no blizzard here. The snow has gotten very light and the winds are not very gusty. We are in a dry slot in the northwest quadrant of the storm. Will it recover and bring more snow? It could go either way.

4pm
I went out and fired up one of the big snow blowers in case I need it later. While I was out there I got a real nice close look at the snow.

It is snowing at a medium rate with plenty of gusty wind blowing it around. The snow is very fine so it blows easily. It looks very dramatic but snowmageddon it ain’t. I measured 2″ of new snow on the walk and driveway and a total of about 6″ on the ground in the middle of the yard. I have been watching it snow out of the window off and on since 9am. I fully expected at least 3-4″ of new snow.

Now at 4pm the flakes are getting a little bigger and the wind is picking up and getting gustier. This is a long term snow event that is expected to snow until noon tomorrow. The way that it is snowing and blowing now I still have faith that we will get a decent dumping.

10:15am

We are under a winter storm warning.

New this morning the NWS has issued blizzard warnings for 7 counties near the Fox Valley and Green Bay.

The morning TV news has us in the 10-12″ range.

As far as short term models the RAP has us in the 10-12″ area and very close to the 12-15″ area. The HRRR is more reserved with us bordering the 6-8″ zone and the 8-10″” zone.

The current NWS forecast for my spot Near Fisher’s Camp is..

So 9-17″ if it all comes home!?! Yowza!!
It did start snowing right at 9am, right on cue.
Most of the local schools have closed and a lot of other closures were scrolling across the TV screen this morning. Quite a few of the bars/restaurants are either closed today or closing early so that people can get home safely.
As of 10:15 both the snow and wind have picked up a little. If you need a last chance trip to the gas station or liquor store you might want to get on that..
More to follow..
