Greetings and welcome!
The weather hates us. Last weekend it was a high of 5 and howling winds making -15 to -30 wind chills and we only got about 4″ out of the huge storm. Five days later we have above normal temperatures stealing our snow and ice.
We only had 10-12″ on the ground to start with. It packed down beautifully thanks to all of the rain that came before the snow. It has been a busy week for traffic on the trails and some high traffic areas are thin or worse. Here is a screen cap from 6:45am Friday showing the past two days’ temperatures along with our current temp of 37 just before sunrise.
It is heartbreaking to think of all of the volunteers working so hard in brutal conditions only to have the weather warm up so much. Coleman already closed their trails due to flooding swamps and bare spots in fields.
Red Arrow club out of Townsend was just on the morning news saying that trails are now open and that as of Thursday they were holding up pretty good.
As always if things get thin here head north and west and into sheltered areas.
A lot of people are asking about the lakes. It has been a really bad year for ice. Some people were walking out a little ways to fish before the warm weather. Personally I’d stay clear, and I wouldn’t take a vehicle at all.
