Ed note- I just saw this- Red Arrow is opening trails at 6pm tonight. The rest of Oconto Co remains closed.
Greetings and welcome!
The storm last night and the storm before it brought the same results. We have a fresh inch of mashed potato rain saturated snow from last night and a similar amount from the storm before it. When it freezes in it will make an insane ice base.
Like the last storm places north and west probably saw more snow and less rain.
I see that Langlade opened part of their system at noon today. I have no idea what conditions are there so I am not in a position to comment on that.
So far Iron Snowshoe and Oconto Co are remaining closed. I applaud that. The trail base is like mashed potatoes. Once it freezes in it will be great. Riding the slop would throw it all off of the trail and leave the third guy riding in the mud. It totally blows to lose a weekend, but it is the right call.
When I went to Carter yesterday I saw that they did indeed have a little more snow, maybe an inch or two. I haven’t been north of there so I don’t know beyond that.
On the way there I saw a stretch between Hwy C & F and Lakewood where the trees were covered in ice. North of Lakewood there was none. That little bit of elevation and minor temperature difference made for a very localized layer of ice.
It is 34º at 2pm. Not helpful. It will go down to 22 tonight and that is a good start. Saturday night it will go to 18 and Sunday night 10 degrees. That’s what we need.
The forecast is for another 2-4” of actual snow tonight. It just started to snow at about 4:30pm.
Bring it!
Events this weekend include the Red Arrow Townsend Snowfest and the Wheeler Lake Jamboree.
