Yesterday’s snow only amounted to a white coating on the hood of the car and other cold surfaces. I did not see white ground here in Silver Cliff or in Wausaukee.
Some friends near Wabeno reported white ground and an inch or two on the truck.
The highest total that I saw for the western UP and NW WI snow belt was 14″ right around Hurley. That is a total from last night, and the radar shows that the snow continued into this morning, so I would expect that higher totals will come in.
The cold behind the storm is pretty real. The low temperature at Athelstane Weather was 19.2ºF at 6:24 this morning. That isn’t a record. According to their site, it got down to 2ºF in 1986.
The cold weather behind the storm is a plus for starting the big freeze-up. It is a good thing to get a little frost in the ground and a lid on the lakes before the snow comes.
Today I am going to tell you about a new place to stay around here for big groups. This summer Minor’s Construction built a big vacation rental property that accommodates up to 7 couples. It is very nice with a large great room, a big gourmet kitchen, full laundry facilities, and even a hot tub. There are seven bedroom and three bathrooms.
It is located 18 miles NW of Crivitz in eastern Silver Cliff. About the closest landmark would be Eagle Creek Pub, the Retreat is about a mile south of there. That puts you on the trail between Silver Cliff & Athelstane, giving you a good location near the High Falls & Caldron Falls Flowages area, and centrally located between Goodman, Lakewood, Crivitz, and Wausaukee.

The Minors have been in the area about as long as I have been (almost 20 years) and are snowmobilers themselves. Their construction company has been a page supporter for a long time, and they are one of my oldest web site customers, with us almost since the beginning.
If you are looking at large group lodging check out this new offering. It is a lot cheaper than renting 5 or 7 motel rooms.
There must be a lot of people in the area hunting this weekend. The internet is absurdly slow, less than 1kb/second. I have had about all of that I can take, so I am off to work on cars & trucks, firewood, and all of the other outside stuff that I need to get done before winter.
