It has been a dandy cold stretch. We are at 2ºF right now headed for a low of -11. Yesterday we only got up to 4 above. Friday we didn’t get above zero. Friday night and Saturday night went down to around -20. The coldest that I have seen in my 26 years here was -34F.
The big push of Arctic air freezing us is responsible for the heavy weather in the south and east. They had brutal ice storms in Mississippi and ice and snow across a big swath of the east. One article said that the storm went from Arizona to Washington DC. When that powerful of a push of Arctic air makes it all of the way to the Gulf of Mexico there is going to be some seriously violent weather. Here we are.
We missed out on all of the severe weather but the cold was no fun. Contrary to the Facebook warnings I am not aware of any trees exploding.
The cold weather has been very good for the trails. There is no melting. The trails groomed out nicely and the limited traffic has helped keep them that way. There is a big ice base with some snow so there will be icy and early season spots.
The weather is expected to moderate to more normal temperatures this weekend. That is good because we have a couple of big events.
The first is Newt Fest..
Then there is the Paul Bunyan Riders (Lakewood) Sno Fun Day. It is their big fundraiser for the year. It is at Waubee Lodge Saturday the 31st.

This is usually a busy weekend coming up. Not only do we have big events but there will be rideable trails and moderate temperatures.
One thing that I haven’t talked about is upcoming snow. There is none in the forecast anytime soon. It would be great if one of the reinforcing shots of cold air could bring a little snow before the weekend.
