Greetings and welcome!
Yesterday would have gone a lot better without the sun. On the way to work yesterday afternoon I could see where some roadside trails were getting a little slushy. One of the sunny hillsides that usually burns off first was getting close. Most of the trails that I passed still looked good, but there were some sunny spots.
It doesn’t look like the weather is going to swing our way later today and tonight. Looking at the radar at 7am I am seeing a mix on the leading edge of the storm, followed by a pretty good patch of snow, and then a big area of rain. Hopefully we get away with some snow into this afternoon and people get a chance to ride before it gets soggy out. That looks promising on radar right now, but the sun has only been up for an hour.
Later tonight the models are showing the rain/snow line pretty much bisecting Lake Superior. It doesn’t look like anywhere in WI or the UP will escape without at least some rain. It looks like the heaviest rain will be closer to Green Bay but we could still see 0.5-1.”.
The back of the storm gets more interesting. The HPC has the storm changing over to snow as early as midnight. That would serve us well with a couple of inches of snow, and maybe a little more Sunday. The others wait until Sunday to switch it over, bringing lower snow totals.
A new weather feature that came into focus last night and today is a second low pressure area coming behind today’s storm. That one is shown coming in about Sunday night and staying for Monday. Depending on the model, it could be a good snow maker for us, or it could stay east of a line from Green Bay to Madison and skunk us.
There is a decent amount of snow shown with it, probably a 3-6″ storm plus. The morning news just showed a forecast animation showing 5″ in Green Bay and almost 9″ in Iron Mountain. The HPC and GFS have it hitting most of northern WI, the NAM has it hitting from Green Bay south to the state line.
The same forecast animation brought a little good news. It showed the rain and show line battle taking place in our neighborhood this afternoon, leaving a chance that today will end up better than it sounds. It still showed rain tonight.
That is news for now. Have a good Saturday and thank you for visiting!
